REBUILT in 1991

REBORN in 2013

Clutch Beginnings

Clutch Sound Studios opened its doors at 1254 East Washington Avenue on September first of 2013. The building that had once been Smart Studios had become available as Butch Vig had moved to California.  Brian Liston had been working mostly in California and was looking for a studio space in Madison near his family. The building at 1254 had a world class build-out that was a perfect match for Liston's diverse media clients.

Smart Studios

The building that now host Clutch Sound  was called Smart Studios, Owned by Butch Vig and Steve Marker.

Smart Studios began in what was then the Ingersoll building in Madison, in 1978. In 1983 Smart Studios moved across the street to 1254 E Washington, where Clutch is now. Then Butch did Nirvana Nevermind at Smart Studios. Most of it was redone, but Polly and several other tracks from the box set were done on site, as was documented in the brilliant Sound City Documentary by Dave Grohl. In 1991 Butch and Steve hired world famous architect Russ Berger to redesign the studio, and he gutted the whole thing.  And made the acoustics what it is today.
